NEW YORK: Indian royalty descended on New York last week for a charity dinner hosted at The Pierre Hotel in midtown Manhattan.
The Royal Rajasthani Gala was aimed at raising funds for the Brain Trauma Foundation's mission of saving and improving the lives of head injury patients in India. The black-tie gala with tables costing $50,000, $25,000 and $10,000 and individual tickets going for $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000, attracted many a New York elite including billionaire philanthropist George Soros.
The event was conducted by Maharaja Gajsingh of Jodhpur, whose son Shivraj Singh suffered serious head injuries while playing polo a couple of years ago. Steered by Maharaja Gajsingh, the Brain Trauma Foundation is expected to establish the India Head Injury Foundation dedicated to limiting the incidence of head injury cases as well as create awareness on prevention. Part of the proceeds from the gala is earmarked for the Foundation to share its intellectual properties with some of the major hospitals in India and to enable use of latest technology to spread awareness in the rural areas. India, incidentally, registers the largest number of head injuries in the world, every year.
