ANAHEIM, CA: On Sunday, October 21, members of San Jose Sikh Gurdwara (largest in the country) and Fremont Gurdwara Sahib (one of the most prominent and influential Sikh gurdwaras in the world) joined together at Swagat Restaurant in Milpitas, California, to provide significant fundraising support for Councilman Harry Sidhu's candidacy for the 33rd State Senate District seat.
This special gathering was hosted by board representatives from the respective gurdwaras, including Surjit Bains, Sukhdev Singh Bainiwal, Bob Dhillon, and Rajinder Singh Mangar. Councilman Sidhu spoke at both gurdwaras on Sunday afternoon reminding all of the importance of continuing the legacy of Dilip Singh Saund, the first Asian American and first native of India elected to Congress in 1956. "Let us remember and bring to light the important legacy of Dilip Singh Saund - the political leader who spearheaded the campaign to allow Indian immigrants to become United States Citizens," declared Sidhu. "Saund's story highlights the struggle of early Indian immigrants in California, the prejudice they faced in rural communities, and how we may rise above it all to gain a voice in government.
Like Saund, I, too, was born in the Punjab province of India and was inspired by the writings of Abraham Lincoln. It is my aim to provide all of you with a necessary 'voice' and leadership as the 'first' elected Indo-American State Senator in Sacramento!" Continuing, Councilman Sidhu emphasized to all that by supporting his campaign efforts, they would be working together toward increasing Indo-American representation at the state level of government. "Change may only come about with your meaningful support," said Sidhu. "We will succeed because we have no other choice. We will work together to save and restore the California dream of good schools, safe neighborhoods, and ongoing opportunity for all."
