Indian children organize fundraiser for fire victims
Tuesday, 11.13.2007, 11:43pm (GMT-7)

LOS ANGELES: It was a regular evening. Karmjit Grewal was watching TV with his family. They were watching evening news about fires in southern California, which left half a million people in shelters and eight people dead. Moved by this devastation, Manninder Kaur daughter of Grewal, said, "We are so lucky we are sitting in the comfort of our home and enjoying the family time and look at these people lost their homes and having to live in shelters with their families." She insisted her father do something for people who are victims of this disaster.

His sons, Japinder and Tajinder, suggested that they should donate a day's earning from their Subway Sandwich business to American Red Cross for fire victims. Moved, Grewal contacted American Red Cross, other Indian organizations and community leaders and informed them of his plan for Fundraiser for Fire Victims on November 4 at his Subway sandwich store in Rancho Cucamonga. Children called their cousins Sam and Jyoti to help them promote the event so they can collect more money for the victims.

On Nov 4, Japinder, Tajinder, Manninder, Sam and Jyoti made the banners and promotion plans. With the help of local community and Indian community, the fundraiser was a great success. The children were excited and happy.

This event was supported by Punjabi Dental Society. Dr DP Singh Nagra, Chairman of Punjabi Dental Society, said, "This was a fundraiser for a good cause, but children also learned if they have a dream or feel good about doing something in life. If they focus on it and work hard, they can achieve anything and the parents are always there to support them and their dreams".
