Bangla community fundraiser for cyclone-hit

 India Post News Service

MINNEAPOLIS: It was another weekend for Apu until he saw news clipping of the week of November 17, 2007 and was heartbroken to see a small boy that was about ten years old holding the body of his younger brother about the age six and looking at the sky.

This boy was lost and without a family in the Cyclone Sidr who just discovered his little brother's body by a marsh about three miles from his house. The view sketched an image in the minds of Apu and the Bangladeshi community. Apu and many others decided to fundraise for the cyclone victims.

There are nearly 1500 Bangleshis in Minnesota. Due to such a big disaster and poor media the community came together and wanted to do something collectively to help the victims of the cyclone. Local volunteers from twin cities worked hard to make the show successful. A crowd of around 300 showed up to support the noble cause.

The show started with down tempo flute background and a little boy coming to the stage, with all torn clothes and shivering in cold. An icon chose to represent those who were spending the night without any shelter or home. Down came the projector screen and an awesome piece was played which blended in cuts from 'Pather Panchali' (Satyajit Ray 1955 film) and recent picture of devastation.

The opening act of the show was a dance piece by Raag Darbari. Following that were some patriotic and songs from Bollywood movies. After the show a break was announced where audience members could enjoy food. A kids fashion show standup comedy followed.
