LOS ANGELES, CA: He started his career bagging groceries during his high school days, and 20 years later, he owns nine independent grocery stores throughout the Southland. But his career didn't stop there.

He took a turn for the better and is now the Planning Commissioner for the City of Cerritos. Meet Naresh Solanki, an entrepreneur who with his diligence has made a name for himself in the Indian community in Southern California.

"While working at the grocery store, I made it a point to learn everything about the business. And when I had saved-up enough money, I purchased my first grocery store in Gardena." That store was a run-down market place which then 25-year old Solanki renovated, and turned into a successful business.

The business progressed and Solanki went onto purchase eight other grocery stores. After much success, Solanki decided to give back to the community he lives in. "There are over 3000 Indians in Cerritos but it's rare that you will see Indians active in their community," said Solanki. "I wanted to change that and make a difference in the community and help my Indian brothers." On Thursday, March 22, Bruce W. Barrows, the Council Member of the City of Cerritos, appointed Solanki as the newest Planning Commissioner.

"My position deals with the redevelopment projects in the city. I will be the gatekeeper of laws that businesses and homeowners will have to abide by for building permits." Father of two young sons, Mehul and Jay, Solanki encourages the young generation to make a difference in the community, "be involved with your local City Council, Chamber of Commerce or the Rotary Club.

Volunteer to assist with the local functions and events; this will enable you to learn more and actually make a change that you want to see." April 4 will be the first meeting that Solanki will attend as the new Planning Commissioner.
