Vaisakhi 2008 rocks Southland

BUENA PARK, CA: Southern California rocked and rolled when the finest of the finest from Punjab regaled the audience with a breath taking performance at the Vaisakhi 2008 concert, held at the Charles Schultz auditorium of the Knotts Berry Farm.It was to a cacophony of screams and whistles that the emcee Arvinder Bharadwaj stepped on the scene to set the ball rolling and introducing the program to the audience.

The first on stage was Parveen Bharta who warmed up the audience with a series of songs.Dressed elegantly in a vibrant turquoise blue Salwar Kameez and matching jewelry she commenced appropriately with a tribute to Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji followed by a striking number made popular by Pakistani singer Alam Lohar " Bol Mitti De Babeya."

With her rich powerful vocals she had her admirers in awe with the long periods she could hold notes at the high octaves. She concluded with two pieces from her CDs in which the pace accelerated with a hypnotic intensity to climax to an avalanche of applause. The pair that came on board next was perhaps the most 'fun' of the evening.

Gurmeet Maan and Payal seemed to be having a whale of time as they entertained the spectators in light hearted musical dialogue on rural day to day domestic situations which included romance, quarrels, drinking etc.

Complementing each other in inimitable style they made a charming couple, he the lovelorn young man and she the vivacious and coquettish belle teasing him into submission! Along with their exuberant singing technique they were also a visual delight as they joyfully danced together often armed with a chimta or a toombi.

The opening piece "Jado Me Ghund Kadeya" was particularly charming with Payal coyly hiding her face behind her duppatta with Maan trying to peek under it. There is no doubt to the fact that this couple was the real stars of the show. It was Deepak Phillon's turn next to work the crowd which she did with an energy level way in excess of what could be expected from a frame so petite and feminine.

Crisscrossing the stage, the little firebrand in dark blue and silver with a single long plait of hair, sparked off quite a bonfire with her rendition of "Yaariyan"- something the crowd seemed to be expecting and just waiting for.Inderjeet Nikoo was next and he had the stage on fire. He opened his score with a feisty Bole So Nihal and then went on to regale the audience with his top hits like Pardes, Singh is King etc.

The grand finale saw Lehmber Hussainpuri rocking the audience with his super hit numbers. The event was presented by Avneet Fashions of Riverside, the sponsor was Bob Virk of One Spot and the show was promoted by Kamaljit Singh Sandhu.
