Shivangi to receive Ellis Medal of Honor Sunday, 05.11.2008, 09:15pm (GMT-7) Dr Sampat Shivangi is being honored with Ellis Is land Medal of Honor for the year 2008 for his contributions to US India relations, his philanthropic work in India and US. The award ceremony will be held on May 10 at historic Ellis Island in New York City. The Ellis Island Medal of Honor are presented to American Citizens of diverse origin for their outstanding contributions to their own ethnic groups, their ancestral countries and to the United States. Past Medalists include six US past Presidents like Presidents Bush Sr, Carter and Clinton as well as Nobel Prize winners and leaders of the industry, education, the arts, sports and Government. Both the United State House of Representative and Senate have officially recognized the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, which ranks amongst country's most prestigious awards. Each year, the names of its recipients are listed in the congressional record. Each awardee represents the very essence of the American way of life, having greatly contributed to national identity, while preserving the distinct values and their heritage. Dr Sampat Shivangi was instrumental in obtaining a first ever large US Congressional grant to study Diabetes Mellitus amongst Indian Americans which has one of the higher incidence of this disease. He served American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin as Secretary, Vice President and founding President of AAPI Mississippi. India Post News Service
