FREMONT: The Domestic Violence and Judicial Education seminar conducted on Saturday, June 21 highlighted some of the important laws and legal procedures involved in domestic violence situations. Participants were informed on a variety of topics; e.g. how to file a restraining order, how can a restraining order protect my child, and how do I file for custody?

Krishna Gulaya, an attorney specializing in the area of family law, emphasized the need for proper and thorough documentation. For example, she stated that if you are filing for a restraining order, then it is pertinent that a victim document her/his history of abuse starting with the latest incident. In addition to the written statements, the person can supplement their evidence with other forms of documentation as well; these can include photographs of the abuse, phone records, police reports, etc. The seminar was then opened up for discussion among the panel of speakers.

Protima Pandey, an attorney from Legal Aid, Riverside, provided valuable insight into the civil rights of survivors. Pandey emphasized that the internet has become a powerful tool in aiding victims of domestic violence as there are innumerous websites that devote themselves to helping such victims on their path to survival. Participants were also told of the programs that are available through the various counties, including those that provide safe havens for children who are being exposed to domestic violence.

The seminar was conducted by SAHARA, South Asian Helpline and Referral Agency, as part of their ongoing Educational Seminars for this year. The next seminar is scheduled for September 20, and will discuss "Intercultural Relationships and Communication".
