NEW YORK: The peetarohana centenary celebrations, or the hundredth year of becoming head of the math by Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi, known as Maha Swami, of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam was celebrated at a function organized by Kanchi Kamakoti Seva Foundation (KKSF) at Saraswathi Hall in Queens, recently.
On the occasion, young children presented a unique Hindustani and Carnatic music concert under the Child Prodigies of America program, in memory of the late acharya. The young musicians -- Mathura Sridharan of Ohio on vocal, Suhas Rao of Massachusetts on the violin and Rahul Iyer of New York on the mridangam presented an unforgettable musical evening. Also, students of music gurus Saavithri Ramanand, Tripthi Mukherjee, Meena Mani's students also presented their choicest Carnatic and Hindustani renderings. There were bhajans and devotional songs. Over 100 devotees attended the celebrations followed by dinner in the form of sathvika ahara.
Shanthi Kumar and A.V. Raghunath of the KKSF and Guruvayurappan and Nathan Shivakumar from New Jersey organized the programs. Earlier, priest Harihara Iyer performed pujas to the acharyas. L. Subramanian, professor of computer science at New York University, spoke about education in India and the role of Asha for Education.
