Kirtan Darbar by children from India
Wednesday, 08.08.2007, 03:59am (GMT-7)

LOS ANGELES: On Sunday, July 29, a Kirtan Darbar was organized at Sikh Gurudwara of Los Angeles, North Hollywood. About 1200 people came for this event. Children who came from Punjab, India, recited Kirtan.

These children are from various private and Khalsa schools in Punjab. They are part of trust known as Satnam Sarab Kalyan Trust founded in 1985 to promote Sikhism in Punjab. The Trust is imparting Gurmat education in various schools of Punjab and Chandigarh by appointing Gurmat teachers. This trust provides divinity (Dharmik) teachers to different schools. Currently there are 80,000 children in about 237 schools under this trust. Gurmat books are also being printed by trust to be distributed among the students.

The trust is mostly running with the help from Sikhs living abroad. It requires $1000 per year to sponsor one divinity teacher in a school. After an amazing kirtan by these kids, the program was followed by Kirtan from Balwinder Singh Rangila, a well known raagi from Chandigarh. Harry Sidhu, an Anaheim City Council Member was also there to encourage people to take part in politics. He asked everyone to support him for the next election of Senator so that Sikhs can have one of their own representations in the United States political arena.
