Sri Lanka Day Expo showcases nation's culture
Wednesday, 09.05.2007, 09:49pm (GMT-7)

SANTA MONICA, CA: The second annual Sri Lanka Day Expo, held on August 25 along all three blocks of the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, California, drew crowds from all parts of California, as well as other states, to enjoy the cultural festivities of Sri Lanka. These included vendors with Sri Lankan arts and crafts, jewelry, music and DVDs. White tents with colorful decorations and Sri Lankan flags lined the Promenade and attracted people of all ages and interests.

The main stage at the Wilshire end held performances by talented Sri Lankan singers, dancers and bands. The stage at the Broadway end also had performances, including the introduction of the new contestants for this year's Miss Sri Lanka-USA and Miss Teen Sri Lanka-USA pageants. The middle block had an array of traditional Sri Lankan food.

Guests could also watch how the food was cooked in the adjoining kitchens. It was a visual treat to see the intricate details of how the specialty foods were prepared.Another highlight of the day was the Sri Lankan parade called "Perahera". This included Sri Lankan drummers and dancers, as well as different groups and races of Sri Lankans represented in the United States.

As the parade made its way from one end of the Promenade to the other, one could see the sea of Sri Lankan flags waving in the air. The event, which took place from 10 am to 10 pm, gave visitors an opportunity to learn about Sri Lanka and its colorful culture and traditions.

Many enjoyed the festivities by dancing on the street to 'Baila' music as live bands played throughout the evening. Sri Lanka Day Expo is held annually at the Third Street Promenade, and is organized by the Sri Lanka Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles.
