NEW YORK: Dr Thakor Rana, a resident of Hastings-on-Hudson in Westchester County, New York has been elected as President of First District branch of Medical Society of State of New York. First congressional district in New York comprises all five Boroughs of New York City representing some 24,000 physicians who practice here.
This is nearly half of all licensed physicians in the State of New York. Dr. Rana said that he is going to try to bring important issues facing physicians of New York to the forefront, namely malpractice crises, tort reform, implementation of electronic medical records to name a few.
During his first meeting of his district last week, Dr. Rana mentioned that his priority was to increase membership in the organized medicine. Many physicians practicing in New York City area do not give priority to getting organized and have unified voice. He claims that with the help of his fellow district members in leadership position, he is going to try to encourage other physicians to join the medical society.
Dr. Rana also said he would try to get district wide continuing medical education day and celebrate Doctors' day which usually comes every March. A graduate from Baroda Medical College, Dr. Rana came to the US in 1970.
He did his internal medicine and cardiology training in Metropolitan Hospital and Montefiore Hospital. He has been practicing cardiology in The Bronx since 1976. Dr. Rana has been board certified in Internal medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Critical Care Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, and Certifying Board of Nuclear Cardiology.
He has also been a Fellow of American College of Cardiology, Fellow of American College of Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians, and he is also Fellow, American Heart Association, Council on Clinical Cardiology and Fellow of New York Cardio logical Society. Dr. Rana was Treasurer of Baroda Medical College of Alumni Association.
The association donated over $100,000 during his tenure as treasurer for improving infrastructure of Baroda Medical College. As faculty of New York Medical College since 1979, he taught cardiology at Metropolitan Hospital from 1977 to 1988. He is currently Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College.
In the past, he had been director of medicine at Union Hospital in the Bronx in the past. Dr. Rana has been appointed member of the Board of Professional Medical Conduct in New York since 1993. This board looks at disciplinary issues involving physicians licensed to practice in New York State. He had been appointed member of Minority Health Council by former governor of New York, Mr. George Pataki from 1999 to 2006.
As founding president of the Bronx chapter of AAPI he has been active in New York, New Jersey area AAPI organization. Along with other colleagues they raised over 150,000 dollars at that time for charitable purposes on behalf of AAPI. Dr. Rana has been instrumental in running several health camps in New York area. In local Gujarati Samaj he had been part of health expo team since its inception and he was instrumental in starting health information seminars there.
Along with his wife Usha, he wrote a book on balanced diet over ten years back, titled "Samtol Aahar" for benefit of Indian community. That book described caloric value of Indian foods and importance of heart disease prevention.
With like minded friends like Dr. Bhupendra Kapadia, Mohan Patel and Dr. Bipin Shah, he has helped to run a charitable Cardiac Care Center in his native town Khambhat in Gujarat where most modern cardiac care is provided at negligible cost to the people of that town and surrounding 50 villages.
In that hospital they have dialysis units and they are planning to install a CT scanner this year. During last year's flood in that area of the Gujarat, a van from this center went to surrounding villages, everyday for one and a half months, and provided needy health care to over 10,000 patients.
