CHICAGO: Maheshwar Foundation of Florida and the Basati family of Illinois have been holding free medical camps for the past seven years at a relatively small village in Punjab, Kamabala near phase 11 Mohali serving the poor and needy in the area.
One such camp was organized last month. Thakkar Basati said that qualified doctors and nurses examine patients and do limited blood tests besides advising patients about continuous treatment. All medicines are provided free, he said.
Even though the village is in vicinity of Chandigarh, yet people are not very enthusiastic to go to hospitals and they eagerly await the holding of the camp as the atmosphere is very friendly. The Basati family from USA- Canada provides for all the expenses of camp.
This year over 300 patients- a relatively low turnout in view of inclement weather- had availed of the facility. The Basati family also donates to local primary school where poor children of the village study.
