Drive to lower toll of chronic diseases
Sunday, 09.07.2008, 10:57pm (GMT-7)

MUMBAI: Sounding alarm bells that chronic diseases afflicting millions of people in India will pull down economic growth by one per cent, a drive has been launched to lower the toll of chronic diseases in the country with help of doctors, NGOs and pharma companies.

"India is becoming the epicentre of chronic diseases... if not checked there will be an annual reduction of one per cent in GDP in India from deaths due to heart disease, diabetes and stroke by 2011," Piramal Healthcare Executive Director Swati Piramal, who is the spokesperson for the initiative--helpyourbody, told PTI.
