CHICAGO: A conference to educate the physicians on the 9-11 emergency procedures was held recently at Viceroy of India in Lombard, a Chicago suburb.
More then 200 IAMA members and guests attended the conference including Consul General Ashok Attri, doctors and medical students of Indian origin. Dr Sajjini Thomas, MD (Program Coordinator) gave an overview of the conference followed by a welcome speech by IAMA president Dr Vemuri S. Murthy. Dr Murthy highlighted the achievements of IAMA and discussed the conference agenda and introduced distinguished panel to the audience.
Consul General Ashok Kumar Attri in his remarks lauded the IAMA for its effort to spread awareness. He also shared his personal emergency experience with the audience. Dr. Kishor Ajmere, MD who was one of the panel members discussed the emergency procedure during heart attack and stressed the need of CPR plus defibrillation within 3-5 minutes of collapse which can produce survival rates of up to 75. Dr. Cathy Campbell, RN, and Dr Rajinder Arora, MD Pediatrician, Lung Specialist discussed various safety and emergency procedures for small kids in cases of choking.
Dr. Surendra M. Gulati, MD Director of Neurology Provena St Joseph's Medical Center and panel speaker made a presentation on Stroke: Prevention, Early Recognition and Management and told the conference that stroke is not an accident but an illness causing neurological impairment resulting from occlusion or rupture of a blood vessel that supplies a specific region of the brain.
Stroke is nation's third leading cause of death, responsible for over 160,000 deaths every year in the US alone. Team of Vibha Chicago volunteers made a presentation about their organization and urged the community to help underprivileged children in India and sought help from young people from different backgrounds for this noble cause. Vibha is a volunteer driven organization with mission to help the underprivileged children.
