CHICAGO: Vaidyaraj Biharilal Sharma is 82 but he walks straight, sees clear, thinks clear and hears well- his non-physical age can be placed at 62. An experienced and highly learned doctor of Ayurveda, medical astrology, Mantra Shastra and also of numerology, Sharma has mastered the art - one can say the science - of Nadi (pulse) Pariksha - understating physical ailments through Nadi movement. Sharma was in Chicago touring the US and India Post had an interview with him in an effort to delve into these ancient sciences and understand how practical and feasible the application of these sciences is in day-to-day life.

He demonstrated his ability by examining Nadis -pulses of two present there and gave a broad diagnosis of their ailments. Sharma, is actively practicing of Ayurveda in Gujarat and Maharashtra regions of India continues to practice Yoga, Pranayama and walks four to five miles every day. He diagnoses the imbalances in physical health by checking the patient's pulse, a method practiced in India by the Vaidyas for many centuries.

According to Biharilal, Ayurveda deals not only with the physical well being of the body, but is closely allied with the mind and spirit connected to the soul. However he admits that human knowledge had not yet reached to the level of understanding the transcendental nature of relations between the spirit and body vis-à-vis diagnosis and treatment according to medicinal applications.

He indicates that "Pranic Treatment" has its root in Ayurveda, which is closely related to Yoga, because several yogic postures and Pranayam exercises have been proven to be successful in the treatment of several physical ailments.

Therefore, along with Yoga which in recent years has become popular in the West, Ayurveda has started making inroads into the health field as an alternative medicine or natural health therapy, which uses natural herbs to prepare medicines.

He states that only Ayurveda teaches relations with bodily energy which controls human life and is known as Prana. He says Ayurveda has close relation with Astrology and analyses the applicability of herbs in relation to the zodiac sign of a person. He says Ayurveda uses natural herbs as a conduit for Prana (energy).

He believes that proper use of Pranic energy in conjunction with right herbs in treating some diseases have been proven to be miraculous. He has worked with several institutions as an honorary Ayurvedic medical consultant, including Asha Parekh Hospital, Mumbai.

At present he offers his help at Anandvan Medical Center, Mumbai. He is also Dean of Nature Cure Hospital in Billimora, Gujarat and is closely associated with Bhartiya Brahm Vidya Research Center.
