Nation pays homage to Nehru
Tuesday, 11.13.2007, 03:10am (GMT-7)

NEW DELHI: The nation fondly remembered the country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 118th birth anniversary, with President Pratibha Patil leading the countrymen in paying rich tributes to the architect of modern India.

A large number of children dressed in white khadi visited Shanti Van, his memorial, to pay tributes to their 'Chacha' Nehru. Besides Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister Shivraj Patil, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit paid floral tributes at the memorial.

The dignitaries released tricolour balloons held by school children who sang patriotic songs. Hailed as the modern architect of the country, Nehru was a multi-faceted personality who also excelled in oratory and literature. His speech on the "Tryst with Destiny" speech on the midnight of August 14-15 is a noted one.

His book Discovery of India is a best seller these days also. He was born on November 14, 1889 and soon after his studies he jumped into freedom struggle. Nehru died on May 27, 1964 when he was the Prime Minister.
