Rahul Mahajan's wife files for divorce
Monday, 12.17.2007, 01:57am (GMT-7)

GURGAON: Fifteen months after their marriage, the wife of Rahul Mahajan, son of slain BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, filed for a divorce at the Gurgaon Sessions court. Shweta Mahajan filed a divorce petition in the court of District and Sessions judge Ramendra Jain.

She was accompanied by her mother and a few lawyers. The court has fixed the date of hearing for Rahul Mahajan on January 24 next. Her lawyers told reporters that Shweta and Rahul, who were long-time friends, had mutually decided to seek divorce.

Rahul and Shweta had completed their flying course together abroad and the two families apparently have known each other since a long time. Their marriage was solemnized on August 29 last year in the presence of BJP's top brass at a time when Rahul was in the midst of a legal battle over his alleged drug abuse.

The ceremony took place three months after Pramod was shot dead in Mumbai. "It's a matter of mutual consent and private matter. I don't want to talk on it any more and what I have said is said and speculation is not part of it and my vocabulary," Rahul told reporters when asked for his comment. He did not elaborate. Shweta maintained silence over the issue.

"Please, it is very personal and leave it at that. I do not want to speak on the matter at all," said Shweta, a former pilot with a private airline. The Mahajan marriage apparently ran into trouble within a few months and a Mumbai tabloid had carried photographs of Shweta with what appeared to be a bruise on her arm after alleged physical abuse by Rahul. She however refuted the allegations.

With his wife going for divorce, Rahul has courted controversy yet again. Earlier, he was hospitalized after an alleged cocaine overdose. After recovery, he was arrested by the Delhi Police on charges of drug possession and consumption and has an ongoing case against him regarding the same.
