NEW DELHI: A greenfield airport will come up in Uttar Pradesh about 60 kms from the national capital, with the Union Cabinet agreeing to a Mayawati government proposal in this regard but referred the matter to a small Group of Ministers to decide on a few legal issues.
A meeting of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved in-principle the state government's proposal which has been vetted by the Civil Aviation Ministry, official sources said. "The airport will be called the Taj International Aviation Hub located in Uttar Pradesh.
The matter has been referred to a Group of Ministers," Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi told reporters. Sources later said the GoM would include Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Law Minister H R Bharadwaj, and Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal to look into the legal issues.
The issues include the Right of First Refusal (RoFR) that can be exercised by the GMR-led consortium, DIAL, which is modernizing Delhi's IGI Airport. The RoFR, which is part of the omnibus agreement, gives right to the consortium to become the preferred bidder for constructing a second airport if it was to come up in the vicinity of the Delhi airport.
The sources said all other issues relating to the new airport were agreed upon by the Cabinet in-principle. The airport, as per a feasibility study of the state government, would be located at Jhevar about 60 km from Delhi and 120 km from Agra.
