NEW DELHI: The 6th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas has been disappointing for many who attended the two day event. As the event takes place every year, the hopes that that it builds up in the Indian Diaspora have been belied, opine some delegates. Says Ramesh Chandra Gathonia, "the quality is declining as well as the number of delegates."
The view is echoed by many more. Dey Bimal Kranti a philanthropist from France says thoughts need to be implemented because even a preacher can talk. Action was missing; as felt by all and sundry. Shashi Desai says that the idea should be to revive Hindutva spirit amongst the Diaspora. PBD seems to have reduced to social networking and a reason to fly back home.
Thus we witness the fall in the number of foreign delegates. But there are few who find this a great effort which helps them bridge the alienation from their homeland. As an artist who went to the states when there were only two Indian stores, she finds that PBD helps to keep a feeling of solidarity in the Pravasis.
Hari Shanker Sharma, from Sweden, pointed out the absence of any basis to select the delegations. According to him the Government should select the delegates from all over on the basis of the work that they do. He also suggested that just the way in UN people make a five-minute speech, PBD should also apply the same for their speakers. As J.K. Chande puts it, "Indian government realized the influence of the Diaspora" but there are still miles to go before the resolutions are achieved."
