CBI seeks early deportation of kidney kingpin Amit Kumar
Sunday, 02.10.2008, 10:57pm (GMT-7)

NEW DELHI: The CBI will approach Nepalese authorities for deportation of Dr Amit Kumar, the alleged kingpin of the kidney transplantation racket.

"We will be approaching the Nepalese authorities' immediately seeking his deportation as he is wanted by Haryana police in connection with the kidney racket," CBI Director Vijay Shanker said here tonight.

The Interpol had issued Red Corner notices against Amit Kumar and his brother Jeevan on February 1. The notices were issued following a request from the CBI after Haryana Police discovered an illegal hospital at a house in Gurgaon where the transplants were carried out.

Given the reach of the racket across India and beyond its boundaries, the Haryana government ordered a CBI probe into it. On February 5, CBI had said it was waiting for an order from Haryana government to begin probing the multi-crore rupees kidney transplant racket.

"The only thing we have received so far is a letter addressed to Department of Personnel and Training. A copy was marked to us (CBI) also," Shanker had said. Haryana government will have to issue a notification to the DoPT which in turn would ask the CBI to examine the case.
