NEW DELHI: India has welcomed the agreement between Nepal government and agitating Madhesis and hoped all parties would honor the deal under which Madhesh region would be granted autonomy.
Making it clear that it was for the people of Nepal to decide about their issues, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said India would continue to support the Himalayan country in "every way possible to achieve the goal of a democratic, stable and prosperous" nation.
"We welcome the fact that the seven-party alliance government of Nepal and the United Madhesi Democratic Front have reached an agreement paving the way for elections to the Constituent Assembly as scheduled," Sarna said.
He was commenting on the peace deal signed in Nepal, under which the government accepted the major demand of Madhesis for an autonomous Mahdes region in exchange for end to a stand-off that was threatening to derail the upcoming elections and causing concern to India.
