NEW DELHI: As the city of Delhi bears the inconveniences associated with laying the infrastructure for hosting the 2010 Commonwealth Games, its visionary Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has asked its citizens to bear with the administration in creating a Dream City.
She has declared that in the next two years, an additional ten thousand buses will be put be put on roads. These will include modern low floor buses. Twenty percent among these will red air conditioned buses which will provide luxury travel in the city.
These buses will be so comfortable that people will stop using cars, she claimed. She said that by 2010, Delhi will become self-sufficient in power production and distribution.
She also wanted to make Delhi free of slums. For this purpose, lakhs of low cost houses are being built under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission.
In the country's Parliament, Union Tourism Minister Ambika Soni conceded the country was short of rooms to meet the requirement for the Commonwealth Games.
She said while 1.5 lakh more rooms were required for the Games, one lakh of these were in the budget hotel category alone and the remaining in the starred categories. She said different agencies, including house owners in Delhi, were being co-opted to meet these requirements.
Laying the foundation stone of the Asiad Village Community Center, Sheila Dikshit praised the Asiad Village Society for going ahead with the construction without asking for help from any government agency.
This community Center is being built at a cost of Rs one crore. She considered the Asiad Village as a model society which had given the administration ideas for developing the Commonwealth Games Village across Yamuna. She also remembered with fondness that Delhi has sister city relationship with the US city of Chicago.
She congratulated the residents and commented that they were fortunate to live in such beautiful surroundings and suggested that the residents should continue to rally together and make the Asiad Village a model residential area for others in Delhi to emulate.
She also highlighted and urged the RWA to access the 'My Delhi I Care' and 'Kalyan Samiti' funds for the purpose for community development. Dr Yoganand Shastri, Minister of Health and MLA, Jaishree Panwar, Councilor; also spoke at the function.
The President of Asiad Village Society R K Khanna welcomed the gathering and in his address shared the various successful activities undertaken by Dikshit during her tenure. On behalf of the RWA the Secretary, Capt Krishan Sharma had three demands of the CM seeking her intervention in:
1) A solution for a clear access for residents to the Asiad Village as the entry remains choked because of the Tower restaurant banquets and noise pollution.
2) Shifting of the Doordarshan News Division from the Asiad premises which causes inconvenience to the senior residents by way of its generators and the numerous cars visiting the facility and the handing over of the premises to the Society.
3) Providing of a battery bus for use by the residents and senior citizens.
