Sunday, 06.08.2008, 09:47pm (GMT-7)

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Police recorded the statement of NRI businesswoman Serafin Edwin whose complaint of cheating against self-styled godman Santhosh Madhavan alias Amritachaithanya triggered the crackdown on "fake swamis" in Kerala.

Her statement was recorded in the presence of Top police officials including IGP Vinson M Paul and Kochi City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham. She is understood to have told the police that she had faced a threat to her life from Madhavan, who she knew as an astrologer in the Gulf.

She has sought police protection. Serafin had alleged that she was cheated of over Rs 40 lakh by Madhavan who promised her help in setting up a business in Kerala. As the inquiry progressed, seven cases were registered against Madhavan including case for rape of minor girls whose studies were financially sponsored by him.

Two cheating cases have also been registered against him. Santosh Madhavan, who is in police custody, was also brought to the Police Club when Serafin was making her statement to police.
