Indian students have fee crisis in Britain, face deportation
Sunday, 07.06.2008, 10:36pm (GMT-7)

MUMBAI: Students of a marine engineering course run by an Uran-based institute in the Maharashtra's Raigad district are now facing deportation from Britain, as the fees paid by them via the institute have not reached the college in Glasgow.

The institute in question, Bombay Science and Research Education Institute (BSREI) has been closed down, as it has no recognition from All India Council For Technical Education. Its accounts have been frozen by CID which is probing criminal cases filed against the management.

As a result, 16 students, who were sent to Glasgow College of Nautical Studies by the BSREI, are in trouble. BSREI had admitted these students in marine engineering course, after a tie-up with Glasgow College.

The students were to complete one year in India, and second in the Glasgow, where they would be given 'higher national diploma'. The students paid 5,500 pounds each as fees for Glasgow College.

In 2007, there were some complaints about the college running marine engineering course without any authorization.

Later, the Director General of Shipping took notice of the college affairs, as it was pointed out that it does not have sanction from DG shipping office to run the courses related to nautical science.

Following the DG's notice, an FIR was lodged against Vikas Chaurasia, trustee of the trust that founded BSREI. It led to a CID inquiry, and eventually sealing of college premises and freezing of bank accounts.
