NEW DELHI: Red, green or yellow- the colors of buttons that decided the fate of the UPA government during the special session of the Lok Sabha on July 22.Members had to press the red button to oppose the motion, or the green button to favor it. Those wanting to choose neither could resort to pressing the yellow key.

A Unified Microphone Management System had been installed to show the division of votes on the floor of the House. In case any member wanted to change the choice, they had to switch over to their desired option within ten seconds after the voting started. The system of polling remained the same, as in the previous confidence votes. Every member casted their choice through the vote recording machine attached to their respective seats. Members had to keep the button of their choice pressed for ten seconds during voting to record their choice.

But all the 21st century technological advances were nullified when 54 MPs did not know how to use these basic, simpleton machines and instead voted through slips. Even then 4 abstained. How shocking to see that the governing bodies at various levels in the State are uneducated, illiterate. What is more pathetic is to witness the commotion accompanied by this voting. The lack of discipline in the House was more disturbing.

When the MPs refused to stay quiet while their votes were being counted manually! The electronic voting would have brought the results out much faster than the manual counts and would have saved the precious time of everyone. Nevertheless, our Ministers ensured that at the most inopportune moment like this they created a ruckus and push the already awaited result further. What baffles the layman is: Was Nuclear Deal an issue that was to witness such a cacophony in the Parliament of one of the world's biggest democracies?
