NEW DELHI: Amid Vedic chants and singing of the 'Ram Dhun', people from all walks of life, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, on Oct 2 paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi on his 139th birth anniversary.
At a special function organized at the Gandhi Smriti here, the Father of the Nation was remembered with an all religion prayer and singing of some of his favorite songs. Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Shipping Minister T R Balu, Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma and members of the diplomatic community also took part in the event.
The function also marked the anniversary of declaration of October 2 as the world non-violence day by the United Nations. Gandhi's message Releasing 'Gandhi ka path' at a function here, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that the Mahatma's message has a universal appeal and was relevant even today. He said his message of peace and non-violence was relevant in the world marred by hatred and conflict.
The book is a compilation in Hindi of speeches and addresses of eminent personalities, including Nelson Mandela, Lech Walesa and several noted Gandhians at an international conference organized by Indian National Congress here last year.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi said that Gandhi's satyagraha was a weapon with which all challenges can be surmounted. The book, edited by Union Minister Anand Sharma, would go a long way in reaching out to the people especially youth, she said.
