THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former Under Secretary General of the United Nations, Shashi Tharoor, has suggested creation of a memorial in the state capital for those who had laid down their lives for the nation's security, taking the sacrifice of NSG commando Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan in Mumbai as an example. "
Kerala should do something to honor those brave young people like Major Sandeep, who sacrificed their lives battling terrorists in Mumbai," he said during an interaction with journalists here. It could be in the form of an 'Eternal Flame' set up at the present Martyrs' Memorial in the city, he said in an appeal to the state government. "It is not just a commemoration of the past. It can be a reminder of how we should fight for the future," he said.
He said the terrorist strike in Mumbai had once again reminded the whole country that national defense and security were above party politics. To questions, he said this was not the time to analyze the strength and flaws in the operation carried out against the terrorists in Mumbai.
However, there was an urgent need to modernize the equipment of combat forces. Also, it was important to have international co-operation in fighting terrorism, he added.
