Terrorists in Kashmir on the run: Army Chief

BANGALORE: Terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir are on the run and steps are being taken to bring infiltration from across the border to a "very low level", the army chief Gen J J Singh said.

"Terrorists are on the run. The surrender of terrorists is taking place," Singh told reporters after inaugurating the new campus of the Army Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology here. "We are taking all steps to ensure that infiltration is controlled and brought to a very low level."

Singh said infiltration attempts are still being made, particularly during the summer months when the terrorists make more attempts to sneak into Kashmir because the "weather is conducive for that".

"When it snows, it becomes difficult," he said. "So, like in previous years, we are geared up for this kind of tactics of the terrorists," he said, noting that the army had recently foiled a few infiltration attempts.

"We will continue to do that because no country in the world can allow armed men with weapons, explosives and other equipment to (infiltrate) in a clandestine manner." The army is also careful while "accepting" the surrender of terrorists.

"While accepting surrenders, we should not accept some people who come with the intention of surrendering to later carry out acts of sabotage and subversion," Singh said.

"So we have to be a little careful about whom we accept," he remarked.
