Eloquent Divya on Mummy Ji
Wednesday, 03.21.2007, 02:07am (GMT-7)

India Post News Service

SAN FRANCISCO: No actress has ever been so eloquent about her role or the film, as Divya Dutta is about her forthcoming film ‘Mummy Ji’, produced by San Francisco Bay area based real estate developer Dave Atwal. He heard Pammi Somal’s script ‘Mummy Ji’ and knew this was the right one to begin with! Divya however cannot get over the way she heard the script. "Pammi who has been a dear friend came home to narrate the story.

She had barely spoken two lines when my mom brought in Kaddi Chawal and Pammi found it so tasty that she told me ‘rest of the story will unfold when you start shooting next month, for now lets just eat!’ But honestly, I trusted her writing skills and the trust factor in her as a friend was too much. I just knew she would bring out the best in me."

Divya plays Muniya, the housemaid, who gossips more than she works! In reality though, Divya enjoyed working with the unit that was so nice and professional. "My dialogues have a lot of punch in them and are catchy. In fact Pammi and I used to sit and discuss my role and used to improvise a lot depending upon the feel of the movie. I had never played a gossip monger in my acting career but I thoroughly enjoyed playing one. My character had so much energy and life that it actually felt real and I carried the character home.

What kind of films do cinemagoers enjoy today and what kind of cinema appeals to her?

"I think the audience has become very intelligent. What they really like is good entertainment. The story must strike a chord with them and appeal to their sensibilities. I am also an audience; I like what the public likes - good cinema, period. If the movie is good I will definitely go and watch in theatre."

How is Mummyji different from other films?

"First of all the title is very interesting and the movie is totally different from what one can expect from a title like that. Everyone would want to know what Mummyji is all about. All the characters are real and look so natural, I would say human. It’s absolutely a delightful film and I bet the audience would want to see it again and again! Mummyji joins my other films like Veer Zaara, Umrao Jaan, Des Ho Ya Pardes, and Waris Shah, that are so close to my heart".

Your future projects?

"I am working with Yash Chopra, Rituparno Ghosh, Rakeysh Mehra, Anil Sharma and many more and would love to work with Pammi again," she smiles. Mummy Ji is Dave Atwal’s first production from Bollywood, starring Kirron Kher, Jackie Schroff, Kanwaljeet Singh, Divya Datta, Sachin Sharma, Viraf Patel, Simran, and a special appearance by Gurdaas Mann who has sung and acted in a special wedding song in Mummy Ji. The film is scheduled for release in early May this year, just in time for Mother’s Day!
