NEW YORK: Noted Bharatanatyam dancer and a teacher in New York, Sadhana Paranji was recently honored in Chennai by Padma Vibushan Dr Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna during the music festival in recognition of her commitment to the promotion of the ancient dance form in the US.
She was conferred the title Natya Kala Vipanchee by Vipanchee Fine Arts at R. K. Swamy Hall in Mylapore following her 90 minute spell-binding performance during the music season in Chennai. Dr. Balamuralikrishna and Kalaimamani Dr Saraswati as patrons of the Fine Arts and in their capacity chose Paranji for the prestigious award.
She is one of the Executive Committee members of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, New York. Paranji started learning Bharatanatyam at the age of seven under Guru Saroja Vaidhyanathan of New Delhi. Her audiences have cut across all ethnic & national lines.
She has performed and held lecture demonstration at the American Museum of Natural History, Danny Kaye Playhouse, Society of New York Consuls General, Boston University, Unison Arts Council, Mohonk Mountain House, Queens Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Queens County Library, Verizon and also at public and private schools as part of her endeavor to educate the non-Indians about Indian classical dance.
She has been featured on the two ABC-TV shows 'Good Morning America' and 'Eyewitness News' and also on Public Access Channels. Dance critics have written good reviews about her in the 'New York Times' & 'Back-Stage' (Broadway magazine). She has been awarded Proclamations by the United States Congress, New York State Senate and New York City Council.
