CHICAGO: The Desi Idol Talent Contest 2008 - the first ever pure Desi effort to bring forth the North American Desi talents in light was held at Gateway Theater in Chicago.
Aanchal Sharma and Namita Moghe were crowned Dance Idol and Singing Idol respectively. Community veteran Iftekhar Shareef presided over the event and distributed awards to them.
The concept to launch Desi artists in the field of music, dance and drama in North America and Canada was mooted with a view to showcase South Asian values and culture to the main stream fellow citizens.
The Board of directors for Desi Idol from Canada and US were Ather Mohammed, Syed Monty, Vandana Jhingan, Fareed Khan, Dhitender Bhagwakar, and Munna. Iftekhar Shareef congratulated the organizers for a success of their maiden effort encouraging local talents.
He said Ather Mohammed did a good job and finally brought the talents from Canada and US on a single platform. He also congratulated the winners.
While young talents were shortlisted from earlier audition and tests for the grand finale, Bollywood known singers Krishna of Chak De India and Salamat also joined the show.
Salmat enthralled the audience with his sojourns rendering of Mohammed Rafi songs. Noman Ali Khan did a brief comic skit on Hyderabadi dialect, Aanchal Sharma was applauded for a sensuous dance performance on popular Bollywood tunes.
Kismat band Asad Khan and Shobi performance was also applauded by the audience. Among other performers, Singer Munir Hassan , Namita, Ramsha Hassan, Shah Khan were good. DDE Showbiz president Shazia Khan presented a fashion show.
As the grand finale concluded, awards were distributed to the winners, personally by Iftekhar Shareef. While Desi Idol search finale was concluded in Chicago, Ather said that the concept will go long way in getting South Asian community youths to shine their talents.
Auditions for Desi Idol have been opened to all Desis between the ages of 14 and 28.
