ST. LOUIS: India's legendary singer performed most creditably in front of a 1,000 plus crowd at the Robert Orpheum Theatre in St. Louis last week. She was accompanied by nine musicians and six dancers from India and sang for one hour, rendering some of her hit songs from old to new.

At age 74, she commands a distinctively different style of singing from her famous older sister, Lata Mangeshkar. Bhosle has worked with a number of crossover bands and is known as the Indian Diva of the Bollywood music industry.

Dressed in a yellow sari, she took the stage to a standing ovation. Following her performance, up and coming playback singer Kunal Ganjawala delivered new hits from Murder to Salaam-e-Ishq. In the later part of the program, Asha Bhosle and Kunal Ganjawala sang some old duets from Teesri Manzil, Caravan and other classic films.

This program was sponsored by Seema Enterprises and Seema World Travels in St. Louis, who have been bringing Bollywood Entertainment to the St. Louis area for the past 20 years. At the end of the program, Ashwin and Raksha Patel honored Asha Bhosle and Kunal Ganjawala with flowers.

The response to Bhosle and Ganjawala was overwhelming. Bhosle said, "It is the love of the people that has kept me strong." Ganjawala said that he looked forward to returning to the St. Louis area. "There is a deep appreciation for music among the people in St. Louis," he commented.
