NEW YORK: Composer, producer and well known tabla player Suphala will be conducting tabla classes in New York starting October. An Indian born and raised in the US, Suphala has studied tabla in the Indian classical tradition for nearly fifteen years, under the two world-renowned father and son legends (the late) Ustad Allarakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain.
She traveled to India annually to study with Ustad Allarakha in Mumbai, India, for months at a time receiving training at the Ustad Allarakha Institute of Music as well as living with the great maestro and studying in the true guru-shishya tradition. Suphala continues to learn and refine her tabla artistry under Zakir Hussain in both the US and India.
Although the classical tradition is the focal point for Suphala, recognizing the endless possibilities of the instrument, she has collaborated with a wide range of artists including Perry Ferrell, Norah Jones, Timbaland, Edie Brickell, Sean Lennon, Yoko Ono, and King Britt.
Also a composer and producer, Suphala has released 3 albums which infuse western instruments, tabla, electronic sounds, top-flight songwriting, and a coterie of talented contributors.
The group class she plans to conduct is expected to create an atmosphere in which one can learn to recognize the sounds and language of the tabla. Recitation, correct finger and hand positioning, and age-old tabla compositions from the great maestros will be taught.
Private instruction can also be availed at the convenience of the student and Suphala. For more details, contact Suphala at: info@suphala.com for details.
