KOLKATA: Coming out in support of the Indian Cricket League, West Bengal Sports Minister Subhas Chakraborty has criticized the BCCI for its hard stance against the Twenty20 series and promised to make available grounds, including Eden Gardens, to the rebel league for holding matches.
"I extend my support and congratulations to ICL. I also extend my support to the ICL's local team - Kolkata Tigers," said Chakraborty, a surprise presence at a media conference organized by the ICL. Criticizing the board, Chakraborty said, "I must protest against the way BCCI had handled the ICL.
This is not the way to tackle such a delicate situation." Chakraborty said he was ready to help out the ICL get access to the Eden Gardens and other stadia across the state for holding matches. "I ask both BCCI and CAB to show sportsman spirit," he said.
"The Indian Premier League (IPL) had asked for permission to stage matches at Eden Gardens and I allowed it. Similarly, if ICL makes such a request, I am ready to offer the ground to them," said the minister.
Chakraborty also gave ICL the choice of making use of other stadia in the districts for matches and practice. Elated after Chakraborty's announcement, ICL chairman Kapil Dev said, "I'm deeply moved.
With folded hands, I have been urging the entire nation for grounds where my boys can play. I have made such requests several times to BCCI also."
Asked how his government could give Eden Gardens to the ICL if the Army renews the lease in favor of CAB, Chakraborty said, "I will look into it. My government will see what could be done."
