Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has said she was not satisfied with her game and would concentrate on one match at a time to last longer in the Bangalore Open. "I'm never satisfied about my game. There is always room for improvement and I'm learning every day,"
Sania told reporters after her practice session. "I concentrate on one match at a time, for the moment it's my first round match," added the 20-year-old, who lost in the semifinals in Pattaya last week. The players taking part in the USD 175,000 Sony Ericsson International were told not to venture out of their hotel rooms and come out for practice only in the evening. The 46-ranked Sania confirmed she will partner Mahesh Bhupathi in mixed doubles event at French Open later this year "but playing with Mahesh in other tournaments is not yet finalized". She said Serena Williams' withdrawal from this tournament is very disappointing.
"She is a great player. I hope Serena will come here next year." Many players in 32-field main draw were seen hitting the ball hard on the purple and green rebound ace courts at the KSLTA Signature Kingfisher Tennis Center in Cubbon Park. Sania is partnering singles top seed and reigning champion Italian Mara Santangelo in the doubles event, where the duo will kick off campaign against Akgul Amanmuradova (Uzbekistan) and Tatiana Poutchek (Belarus).
Satangelo broke through for her first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title here last year while Mirza and Tanasugarn are the only other two among the eight seeded players in this tournament to boast a similar singles title against their name. The winner takes USD 25,840 besides collecting 140 Tour points while the runner-up USD 13,520 and 100 points in this tournament, bereft of World No 15 Serena Williams, who pulled out due to flu.
WTA Tour spokeswoman Sally Bradfield said there would not be extension of dates even though the tournament will start one day late. "Certainly there is no extension of dates for this championship as the finals are slated for Sunday, February 18," he said.
