Cong rep in US to clarify nuke deal stand
Friday, 04.25.2008, 11:25am (GMT-7)

NEW YORK: The Congress Party of India dispatched its chief spokesperson, Dr Abhishek Singhvi, to the US to clarify for the American government and the foreign policy establishment here where the US-India Civilian Nuclear Agreement stands currently. Dr Singhvi, whose US tour was organized by the US-India Business Alliance (USIBA), conducted meetings in the nation’s capital and in particular with officials at the Pentagon, on April 14.

The following day, he addressed the World Affairs Council, DC and the Heritage Foundation. He also participated in a closed-door briefing with Members of Congress and their senior staff.

A USIBA release says it is good that the Congress Party sent someone who is such a legal expert and who actually spoke in favor of the agreement on the floor of the Indian Parliament, especially given Dr Singhvi himself describing the debate on this agreement in India as, "involving an unusual amalgam of law, politics, economics, technical jargon, and statistical analysis."

This is a historic opportunity and with uncertainty increasing among American policymakers and with the eyes of Congress beginning to focus more and more on a presidential election the timing of this visit is critically important for the US and India, the release states. "USIBA is very privileged and honored to help advance the policy dialogue here by organizing the US visit of Dr Singhvi - a long-time patron and frequent speaker at our events," says Sanjay Puri, President and CEO, USIBA. "We remain cautiously optimistic about the agreement process and will continue to support its successful conclusion in any and all ways possible."

Dr Singhvi also visited New Haven, CT and Boston, MA speaking at Yale University, MIT, and Boston University. While in Boston, he participated in a joint technology event focusing on China, India, and Russia organized by the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council (MTLC), the USIBA, the New England-Chinese Information and Networking Association (NECINA), The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) - Boston Chapter, and the US-Russia Chamber of Commerce of New England (USRCCNE).
