NEW YORK: Two public organizations from India were conferred the United Nations Public Service Awards 2008 at the UN Headquarters in New York on June 23, the date designated by the UN General Assembly as the UN Public Service Day.
Twelve awards were selected in the ‘Winners’ category and six Awards in ‘Finalist’ category’ from among 183 innovative programs from 57 countries. A delegation led by R.S. Pandey, Steel Secretary to the Government of India (Former Chief Secretary, Government of Nagaland) received the Award conferred on ‘Program of Communitization of Public Institutions and Services, Nagaland’ in the ‘Winners’ category.
This program significantly improved public service delivery in essential services, viz. health, education and electricity through an imaginative empowerment of user community in a legislative framework. It is also playing a key role in achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The District Lokvani Society, Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, India, was also selected for receiving under the ‘Finalist’ category for providing information about government services in rural areas and for providing a channel for redressing citizens’ grievances through an on-line portal.
