Jay Goyal receives Statewide Honor
Monday, 05.21.2007, 02:31am (GMT-7)

NEW YORK: State Representative Jay P. Goyal, (D-Mansfield) received the Young Democrat of the Year Award at this year’s Ohio Democratic Party Annual State Dinner. This award is given annually to a young democrat who has achieved distinction in service to the party. On receiving the award Goyal said, "Certainly I am quite honored to receive it.

The party’s recognition of my commitment and desire to serve the constituents of the Richland County and address critical issues such as jobs and education is very gratifying." Governor Ted Strickland commented, "Jay is a great role model for Ohio’s young people. He is proving that our youth are an important part of the political process. I hope others look to him as an example of how far a person’s commitment and dedication can take them. We need them to follow in his footsteps. I look forward to working with Jay as we turn around Ohio.

" Party Chairman Chris Redfern said it is unusual for a State Representative to receive the award: "Often the award goes to a dedicated volunteer – but this year, we felt that Jay’s unprecedented success as a young legislator make him the perfect candidate. Jay’s age gives him a unique perspective on the major issues facing our state. He understands the state of our educational system and has the energy and passion to fight for more and better jobs."

Richland County has a history of distinguished State Representatives. US Senator Sherrod Brown, a Mansfield native won this Statehouse seat at the age of 22. He was followed by Frank Sawyer who held the seat from 1982-1998 and served as chairman of the Public Utilities Committee. Following Rep. Sawyer was the current Legislative Director for Governor Strickland, Bill Hartnett. Commenting on Goyal receiving the award, Senator Brown said, "Jay’s commitment to public service was clear from the beginning of his campaign.

He worked tirelessly meeting with the hard working men and women of Richland County and talking with them about their concerns and their hopes. Jay will be instrumental in helping lead Ohio in a new direction and I continue to be impressed by his efforts." Legislative Director Bill Hartnett has recognized Goyal’s potential from the start. "Jay’s a go-getter. That has always been obvious. He worked hard, ran his campaign well and now he is getting to work addressing the needs of his constituents. He’s doing a great job. The district is in great hands with Jay." Goyal won his bid for the 73rd House District with 63 percent of the vote. He is currently the youngest member of the Ohio General Assembly.
