Ex-UN official from India gets eight years in jail

NEW YORK: A former UN official from India, convicted of helping a friend win USD 100 million in UN contracts in return of cash, gifts and a discounted luxury Manhattan apartment, has been sentenced to more than eight years in jail by a US court.

So Cal Tibetans protest before Consulate

LOS ANGELES: Over 200 Southern California Tibetans and Tibet supporters joined in the Global Day of Action by protesting at the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles. There was a big contingent of Vietnamese Americans, many of whom having lived under Communism came to show their solidarity with the suffering people of Tibet.

LONDON: Creating history, India's top corporate Tatas has acquired luxury auto brands -- Jaguar and Land Rover -- from Ford Motor for 2.3 billion dollars, stamping their authority as a takeover tycoon.
Beating compatriot Mahindra and Mahindra for the prestigious brands, just a year after acquiring steel giant Corus for 12.1 billion dollar, Tatas announced the deal they signed with Ford, which on its part would chip in 600 million dollar towards JLR's pension plan.

WASHINGTON: External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee met US President George W Bush here at the White House and discussed the entire gamut of bilateral ties, including the civil nuclear deal.
