NEW DELHI: Expressing solidarity with people of North East, Rajya Sabha today passed a resolution seeking investigation against those creating panic, with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying those responsible be brought to book.
“The House expresses its serious concern at the feeling of persecution of our brothers and sisters of the North Eastern states, who are leaving various cities and returning to the North East.
“…The mischief mongers and anti-national elements behind the electronic campaign to create panic should be urgently investigated by the authorities,” the resolution read out by Chairman Hamid Ansari said.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said miscreants spreading rumors that have led to people belonging to North East flee from Bangalore, Pune and other parts of the country, should be brought to book and noted that at stake is not just unity and integrity of the country, but also communal harmony.
Warning stern action against those behind the “most reprehensible” act of creating insecurity, Singh said, “Any miscreant fanning rumors should be brought to book…Whatever may have happened in Kokrajhar should not be used as an excuse to fan rumors. North East is a very sensitive region.”
He asserted that government would do everything to control the situation and provide security to people of North East.
The resolution, passed by members of various parties, also stated, “This House appeals to all those, who are returning to North East, not to be misled by false rumors and to come back to their place of study or work. Their presence in various parts of the country promotes national unity.”
Ansari earlier suspended Question Hour to take up a discussion on the issue and members of various parties expressed their concerns and demanded action against those spreading rumors to create panic. –PTI
