NEW YORK: Indian Americans across the country have welcomed reports that two schools in Rhode Islands in East Coast near New York – Smithfield Public Schools and Barrington Public Schools have listed Diwali on their respective calendars,
According to their 2012-2013 School Calendar (Smithfield’s was approved on October one), Diwali is listed at November 13 under “Major Religious & Cultural Holidays”. Both Smithfield and Barrington Public Schools have six schools each and Robert O’Brien and Michael B. Messore III are superintendents of Smithfield and Barrington Schools respectively.
In the light of growing importance and presence of Indians across the country, many feel that other schools in East Coast should also follow the step the Rhode Island schools and list Diwali as a major holiday. This would help bridge the cultural gap between East and West, feels Madhu Patel, president of NRI Press Club.
Rajan Zed, president of Universal Society of Hinduism said that such listings would make the Smithfield and Barrington Public Schools’ pupils well-nurtured, well-balanced, and enlightened citizens of tomorrow. He joined Madhu Patel in asking all school districts in Rhode Island to list Diwali as a religious/cultural holiday.
