In an era in which the conversation about menstrual equity is gaining traction, a high school junior named Evanka Parekh has taken steps to address the ramifications of this inequity in her local community. Return Gifts, a non-profit founded by Evanka, is dedicated to providing menstrual products for women and girls in need. This initiative is making a tangible impact by ensuring that menstrual health does not become a barrier to work, education, or daily life.
The idea for Return Gifts stems from Evanka’s realization of the prevalent, yet often overlooked, issue of menstrual inequity. Evanka recognized that many women and girls still lack access to essential menstrual products, leading to significant health risks and social stigmas. Determined to make a change, she embarked on a mission to collect and distribute menstrual items to those who could use them, thus establishing Return Gifts. The organization has a clear mission: to provide menstrual products to women and girls who cannot afford them, promoting menstrual health and hygiene. The vision extends beyond just distribution; it aims for a world where no one must choose between necessities like food and menstrual products, education about menstrual health and products is widespread, and stigma around menstruation is eradicated.
In just over a year, Return Gifts has made significant strides in its mission, successfully donating about 20,000 menstrual products to City of Fremont, (Family Resource Center), SAVE (Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments, Fremont), EBAC (East Bay Agency for Children in Oakland), and the Boys and Girls Club of America in Alviso. These partnerships have enabled Return Gifts to reach a wider audience and make a substantial impact.
