Continuing a commitment to excellence, healing, and innovative care, close to home

FREMONT, CA: Washington Health announces the expansion of the UCSF-Washington Cancer Center, top-tier facility serving the Tri Cities in collaboration with UCSF Health. The expansion gives the residents of Alameda County and the surrounding region even broader access to cancer treatment and services, including integrated and holistic care, a network of specialists and experts, and access to clinical trials without having to travel across the Bay.

“This expansion represents more than additional space — it is a reflection of our unwavering commitment to this community and to every person facing a cancer diagnosis,” said Kimberly Hartz, Chief Executive Officer. “Through our collaboration with UCSF Health, we are bringing world-class oncology expertise, advanced treatments, and access to clinical trials closer to home so our patients and families can focus on healing, supported by exceptional care, compassion, and hope, right where they live.”

Driven by a shared commitment to exceptional, community-based care, the new cancer center was made possible through the Washington Health Foundation and the generosity of community donors, physicians, and staff. Leadership gifts from Fremont Bank Foundation, Paul and Sandi Bonderson, and John and Candace Hallquist, among others, helped turn this vision into a lasting resource for patients and families, close to home.

“We are proud to support the UCSF-Washington Cancer Center, a next-generation facility that brings innovation, hope, and excellence to cancer care,” said Brian Hughes, President and Executive Director, Fremont Bank Foundation. “With a best-in-class infusion center in Southern Alameda County, patients in the Tri-City Area can receive top-tier care close to home, without the burden of long travel. We are honored to partner with Washington Health in delivering this vital resource to our community.”

Six years in the planning and construction process, the new UCSF-Washington Cancer Center, located at Washington West, 2500 Mowry Ave., can now serve more patients. The new center began seeing patients today.

“As a cancer survivor and patient of the UCSF-Washington Cancer Center, I know the center delivers extraordinary care and the staff help make a difficult situation bearable,” said Paul Bonderson, a retired electrical engineer with a career in networking solutions and services companies. “I am so grateful for advanced treatment close to home; it was important to me to support increased access to help meet the growing needs of our community.”

The newly expanded cancer center encompasses 15,000 square feet of dedicated space and is supported by a multidisciplinary team delivering advanced cancer care. In addition to comprehensive clinical services, the center advances research and education while providing patients access to a robust portfolio of clinical trials. Advanced cancer care services include:

  • Medical oncology
  • Infusion services
  • Pathology
  • Care navigators and social workers to guide patients through their cancer journey
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Financial counseling
  • Survivorship and support programs

Providing the most advanced equipment, the new space accommodates eight exam and procedure rooms, 17 infusion chairs, three private treatment rooms, a full-service on-site pharmacy, a centralized nurse station, and a modern family waiting area. The center is currently participating in 10 clinical trials, with four more on the way.

“Our community asked for this, we listened, and together with our UCSF Health partners, we are responding to the growing demand for top-tier accessible cancer care for generations to come,” said Hartz. “The dream to expand would not have been possible without our generous donors. It is exceptional relationships with community-minded organizations and residents that enable us to continue providing the most advanced technologies and treatments, world-class physicians, and compassionate health care for this community.”
