JAMMU: Tourism development should not disturb local ecology and environment of tourist spots in Jammu and Kashmir as people visit them for their natural beauty, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said here.
Chairing the sixth meeting of Pahalgam Development Authority here, Omar said revival of tourism industry would open up economic opportunities for people and help in the growth of economy.
He, however, added that while planning tourist infrastructure, maintenance and conservation of environment and ecology should be made the top most priority.
“People visit us for the natural beauty and scenic splendor God has bestowed on the state. It should be our prime duty to protect and preserve this novelty and specialty for present and future generation,” the Chief Minister said.
Eco-friendly tourism should be popularized and mass awareness needs to be spread in this regard, he said.
The meeting was attended by Tourism Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister of State for Tourism Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Rafi Ahmad Mir and other senior officers.
The meeting discussed matters relating to upgradation of water supply and electricity facilities in Pahalgam and adjacent areas.
It also discussed issues relating to drainage and beautification of Beetab Valley, development of additional picnic spots and camping sites, disposal of garbage, development of walk-ways, registration of ponies and creating skiing slopes in Aru.
