NEW DELHI: BJP MP Sambit Patra on Wednesday said that the Northeast region has witnessed a significant transformation since 2014, highlighting the government’s focus on development, cultural recognition and addressing key issues concerning the region.
Speaking at a press conference, Patra said that before 2014, the abbreviation “NE” was interpreted as “Non-Existent”, but under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, it has taken on a new meaning as the “New Engine of Growth” for India.
“Before the 2014 government, NE meant ‘Non-Existent’, but since PM Modi came, the term changed. It means the ‘New Engine of Growth’ of India. From no existence to a new engine, this is a huge change for the northeastern states,” he said.
Patra said discussions were held with newly MLA’s of legislative assemblies on various development-related matters concerning the Northeast. “There were four important issues for which we had discussions with them on development topics,” he said.
He highlighted the demand for recognition of regional languages and said discussions were held regarding the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the recognised language list. “I think Sabka Saath, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Vikas sees an opportunity to respect every language in the Northeast and every tribe in the Northeast,” Patra said. He added that the government was looking into certain amendments and issues raised by people from the region.
“There are certain amendments that the Government of India is looking after,” he said. Speaking about other concerns, Patra said coal mining and the rehabilitation of the Sikh community were among the issues discussed.
“Coal mining is one of the issues which we will look into, and as far as the Sikh community and the rehabilitation of the Sikh community, that issue is also an important issue,” he said. Patra expressed confidence that the concerns would be addressed under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“We will successfully resolve the issue under the Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he added. He further said that the government’s approach of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Vikas” aims to ensure participation and development for all communities and tribes across the northeastern states.
