CHICAGO: Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherdord, a Republican Senator from the State of Illinois, has co-sponsored an exhibit of Sikhs Contribution in World Wars in posters.
Posters are generated by S Sarwan Singh Raju, a board member of Sikh Religious Society of Chicago, Illinois. There are 12 posters of Sikhs in various frames with quotations from military officials and prominent politicians. Many of these are displayed in Gurdwaras now and people admire them, take pictures and share with their friends.
Over 83,000 Sikhs died in World Wars and over 103,000 were wounded fighting alongside British and US forces. Many of US citizens are not aware of Sikhs contribution and think Sikhs are turban wearing Muslims as shown by media. Sikhs have suffered a lot due to mistaken identity and this is one way to educate them.
About 30 Sikhs from various organizations showed up for photo session with the Treasurer to thank him for his co-sponsorship at Illinois State building lobby in Chicago. Indian Consul D. Bannerji in Chicago attended the event.
Rutherford had promised during PCS function recently that he would help recognize the contribution of Sikhs in World Wars. Rutherford made a very impressive speech about Sikhs maintaining their identity and yet fighting without the fear of losing their life, protection provided by their turban, not helmet as is the norm in Military. Consul Bannerji also spoke about Sikhs’ contribution in uplifting India both in Defense and Economics. S Rajinder Singh Mago, a former President of PCS Chicago, talked about Sikhs in Midwest area and some of the problems they are facing.
Prof.Jagindar Singh Ramdev, a well known scholar, stressed the peaceful tenets of Sikh religion. S Sokhi Singh, President Sikh Religious Society Chicago thanked the Treasurer and Bannerji for representing Indian Consulate. He invited them to visit Sikh Gurdwara Sahib in Palatine. Both Rutherford and Consul Bannerji were honored with a flower bouquet.
