MUSCAT/NEW DELHI: An Indian, who was kidnapped last week from the city of Sohar, 200 kilometers from Muscat, was today rescued by the Omani police which arrested two of the seven Pakistani nationals involved.
Official sources in New Delhi said, the Indian Mission in Muscat had taken up the matter with local authorities over the weekend and were assured that necessary action would be taken.
“Today at 0230 hrs this morning Omani police have rescued the kidnapped Indian national. Apparently 2 of the 7 Pakistani nationals involved have also been arrested,” they said.
Meanwhile, the family of the worker identified as Haneefa from Kerala had received calls demanding huge ransom for his release, according to media reports.
Later, his family reportedly received phone calls from Oman by “Urdu-speaking people” demanding money in return for his release, the reports said.
“They were calling from Internet phones. Later, when we stopped receiving those calls, we discovered they had pressured Haneefa to make calls from his own number,” his family said.
The family had said initially the callers were demanding OMR 2,000 (USD 5,201) within 24 hours for his release, but later the demands were changed. -PTI
