The 3rd annual Third World Independent Film Festival’s (TWIFF) red carpet event was held at Dave and Buster’s in the Great Mall Plaza from 6.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. TWIFF’s collection of films depicting Third World hardship and triumphs gets at what matters not only to Third World people, but all the people. The event screened films from India, Uganda, Grenada, USA, Philippines, Nepal, Thailand, Lebanon, Vietnam, North Korea, Cambodia, Syria, Bolivia, Guyana, Sudan, Nigeria, Guatemala, and Finland.
The program started with light refreshment, drinks and entertainment followed by TWIFF 2013 Awards. The best social entrepreneur (short film) award went to Life Changing Moments-Uganda produced and directed by Dr Sherry Thomas. Dr Thomas was frequent traveler to Africa where she saw the health conditions of the people, specially women. She decided to bring this to the whole world’s attention that what kind of medical privilege a woman has in the Third World. Another best Narrative (Feature) was from Philippines ‘Alagwa/Breakaway.
In the short film category, Best documentary was Gawah from India, produced and directed by Gauri Chadha. This short film was about the victims of 2008 Mumbai attacks. Gauri Chadha as a writer and director has always been the one to try and dive into the issues to understand a particular situation from reality of a certain individual at the root level. She explained the motivation behind this short film as learning about “how do we witness and survive”. It took about three years to make ‘Gawah’ as Gauri was explaining her adventurous journey that how she learnt to understand the bridge between the craft and the business of film industry. Gauri hopes that moviegoers will gain a different perspective on such situations. As terrorism is not bound by border, culture or creed, after seeing ‘Gawah’ she hopes the audience will understand that our greatest strength as a civilization is unity, and Gawah can represent a pathway to this.
Gauri Chadha has made four films comprising a short fiction, an experimental short, a short feature and a short documentary. Aside from this she has worked on numerous commercials, corporate videos and several Bollywood and a few Hollywood feature films such as “Mission Impossible” and “Ghost protocol”. Currently she is working on her feature film which is a crime drama that explores the human psyche.
TWIFF attracts many film entries from Third World countries and has grown into an important part of international film movement and encourages their development.
