Pb sacrilege: Phoolka to offer free legal help to accused

H S PhoolkaCHANDIGARH: Noted Supreme Court lawyer H S Phoolka today offered to provide free legal help to the family of two brothers, who were arrested by Punjab police in the alleged sacrilege incident at Bargarhi village in Faridkot district.

“I was asked by activists Panthpreet Singh, Giani Kewal Singh as well as Panchayat members of Panjgrain Khurd village to provide legal services to the brothers and I have agreed to give them my services free of cost,” he said.

He said family of the two arrested brothers, residents of Panjgrain Khurd village, also met him in this regard.

Phoolka, who had resigned from all posts in Aam Aadmi Party last month, described the arrest of the brothers Rupinder Singh and Jaswinder Singh as a “frame up”.

“It (their arrest) is a total frame-up. Panchayat members told me that instead of arresting real culprits, police arrested the innocent brothers,” he said.

Phoolka noted that he was also planning to move National Human Rights Commission in this regard on behalf of the accused’s parents.

The lawyer said that he is ready to provide help to advocates who are fighting the brothers’ case in Faridkot.

Phoolka had yesterday met Sikh activists and Panchayat members of Panjgrain Khurd village at Moga who have been demanding the release of the brothers.

Punjab police had announced the arrest of the duo in connection with the sacrilege incident at Bargarhi in Faridkot on October 20.

Punjab is on the boil for about a week over sacrilege incidents and police firing, even as the administration is trying hard to maintain law and order. –PTI
